As the technology around us is making rapid progress, our smartphones have come to a point where they can last longer than they used to a few years ago without missing out on too many cutting-edge technologies. Smartphone brands must realise this and ensure users enjoy using their phones throughout their lives. It will be possible by providing more extended software support for these devices. And while many brands have improved in this regard, Samsung currently takes the crown.

Samsung 4-Year Android Updates Policy

In 2022, Samsung announced it would offer four years of major Android OS upgrades, which means four generations of their software skin One UI, to select devices. On top of this, these devices are also eligible for up to five years of security patch updates to ensure the safety of users’ data and privacy.

So, Samsung devices are ahead of even Google Pixel phones since Google promises to offer three years of Android version upgrades and five years of security updates. In the case of Samsung, this was three years of major upgrades alongside four security updates earlier.

It should be noted Samsung’s 4-year android update policy does not apply to all of its devices across the board. Only select devices are eligible to get four versions of Android and five years of security updates. Below is a list of all such devices that we currently know of.

Samsung Galaxy S Series Tablets

  • All upcoming Galaxy S series tablets
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra (launched 2022 with Android 12)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ (launched in 2022 with Android 12)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 (launched in 2022 with Android 12)

In addition to these, some select Galaxy A series and Galaxy M series devices are also eligible. Currently, these include:

Samsung’s product line-up is not limited to smartphones and tablets. They manufacture wearables too. Below is the list of wearable devices from Samsung that are eligible for four years of One UI Watch and Wear OS upgrades.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro (launched 2022 with Android Wear OS 3.5)
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (launched 2022 with Android Wear OS 3.5)
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (launched 2021 with Android Wear OS)
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (launched 2021 with Android Wear OS)

Conclusion

This is an excellent move by Samsung, and we hope other smartphone brands soon follow suit. More extended software support helps users get a good experience with smartphones for a longer time without losing on the latest features and security measures.
